Want to volunteer but don't have a lot of time a month?  Check out the list below and see if any of our volunteer opportunities would work in your time schedule.

Volunteers don't get paid.  Not because they are worthless,

but because they are priceless.

The Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter functions and carries out its many activities through the generous donation of time and talent of volunteers.  Thankfully, volunteerism is alive and well in the Indiana community.

The reasons for becoming a volunteer are as varied and unique as the many volunteers working on behalf of the lupus cause.  First and foremost however, each volunteer in the lupus organization seeks to find a cure for lupus and support those with lupus as well as their family and friends.  The personal benefits gained from volunteering for an organization such as the Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter, are countless as well.  The camaraderie and friendships gained, the opportunity for personal growth and learning, the chance to share the skills and expertise that each of us have, the therapeutic value of seeking to create positive change for those dealing with this chronic illness, the good feelings arising from contributing to the community, are all awaiting the volunteer.

There are many needs within the Indiana Chapter.  Commitments as little as a few hours a month can make a significant contribution to lupus activities carried out by the organization.  Please consider becoming a volunteer.  The following information will help make the initial contact easy.

Board of Directors/Medical Advisory Board/Resource Advisory Board

  • Board members serve a 3-year term and are expected to chair a committee.  Resource Advisory Board members are invited to attend board meetings, but it is not mandatory.  Their commitment is to be available to offer their time and talent when called upon.  The Medical Advisory Council provides authenticity to medical information, may be asked to write an article for the chapter newsletter and/or present a topic of interest at an educational meeting.

Support Group Facilitator/Co-Facilitator

  • Volunteers are asked to attend a one-day training session.  The facilitator oversees the group, solicits help from other group members to obtain speakers, manage a "telephone tree," and other duties deemed necessary.  The co-facilitator assists the group facilitator and will oversee the group in the event the facilitator cannot attend.  Volunteers should plan six (6) hours a month to dedicate to this position.

Newsletter Committee

  • Can you process bulk mail?  The chapter sends 800 copies of the newsletter to chapter members, area physicians, members of the media, libraries and community groups.  Volunteers label newsletters, count pieces, prepare paperwork and deliver pieces to the post office six times a year.

Information Services Committee

  • Can you distribute books and literature to libraries throughout Indiana?  Please volunteer.

  • Can you distribute literature to physicians throughout Indiana?  If you can deliver material to offices in Lake, Porter or LaPorte Counties or even just your own doctor, please volunteer.

  • Can you work at our booth at health fairs to educate the public about lupus?  Please volunteer.

  • Can you help with the Cultural Diversity program? Please volunteer.

Events Committee

  • Pizza Bash Committee.  This social is held in the Fall.  Volunteers mail invitations, call chapter members, accept RSVP's and more.

  • Holiday Social Committee.  The social is held the first Sunday in December.  Volunteers mail invitations, call chapter members, accept RSVP's, solicit for door prizes, plan decorations, and more.

Fundraising Committee

  • Stay At Home Tea Committee.  The tea party is held in the Spring near Lupus Alert Day.  Volunteers mail invitations, call chapter members and more.

  • Help plan the annual Walk for Lupus Now held in October.

  • Sell coupon books.

  • Help plan the Chili Cook-Off held in March.

Think you can help? Please contact the chapter to find out where you can help out! Thank you for becoming a volunteer.
